There are five major aspects that form the foundation of chart interpretation. All were defined by Ptolemy and are evenly divisible within a 360° circle. Each creates a distinct type of energetic relationship between two planets.
A conjunction happens when two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac, fusing their energies into a single powerful force. The result depends entirely on which planets are involved — Venus conjunct Jupiter feels like effortless abundance, while Mars conjunct Saturn can feel like driving with the brakes on. Conjunctions are the most intense aspects in your chart because the two planets cannot operate independently.

Sextiles are gentle, supportive connections that create natural opportunities between two planets. Not all aspects are created equal. An orbis the degree of exactness of an aspect — how close the planets are to the precise angle. The tighter the orb, the more intensely you'll feel the aspect's influence in your life.

For example, if your Sun is at 12° Taurus and your Venus is at 13° Taurus, that's a conjunction with just a 1° orb — extremely powerful. But if your Sun is at 5° Pisces and Venus is at 12° Pisces, the 7° orb means the energy is present but much more subtle.
Practical guideline: Focus on aspects within 5° for the most meaningful interpretation. Conjunctions and oppositions are often given wider orbs (up to 8°) because their influence is inherently stronger, while sextiles are typically held to tighter orbs (4–6°).

Is it harmonious (trine, sextile), challenging (square, opposition), or fused (conjunction)? This sets the baseline: harmonious aspects show natural talent and ease, challenging aspects show areas of growth, and conjunctions amplify whatever planets are involved.
What domains are interacting? A Venus-Mars aspect connects love and drive. A Mercury-Saturn aspect connects thinking and discipline. The planets tell you what areas of life are affected.
The houses the planets occupy show where in your life the aspect plays out. A Venus-Saturn trine in the 5th and 7th houses is great for committed relationships. The same trine in the 2nd and 10th houses might show financial discipline.
A tight orb (under 3°) means the aspect is a defining feature of your personality. A wide orb (5-8°) is more subtle. Focus on your tightest aspects first — they're the most important.
Some planets in your chart will have many aspects — they're "busy" and central to who you are. If your Mercury has five aspects while your Neptune has one, communication and intellect are a bigger theme in your life than spirituality.
A planet with no aspects stands alone, free to express its energy however it likes. This can mean extreme expression — an unaspected Moon might mean you either suppress your emotions entirely or wear your heart on your sleeve.
